Another interesting angle I’ve heard is team sports. If a young man participates in team sports, and understands the concept of everyone pulling together, making sacrifices for a common cause, then he’s more likely to show up on time for work, everyday and sober.

True, but what got most young men interested in sports to begin with? The jocks got the girls, or they used to anyway.
